Its Oscar’s 2nd birthday. He’s had a wonderful day and just loved his Makka Pakka cake. Makka Pakka is a character in the children’s TV program In the Night Garden. He’s Oscar’s favorite and lucky for us he is light brown in colour. Oscar always misses out when the other kids have birthday cakes at the day care centre, He does have his own cupcakes kept in their freezer for such occasions, but Mum wanted to make his own birthday pretty special.

Birthday cakes at the centre have to be commercially made (for food safety reasons), so I had my friend Krys, who runs her own baking business (Baked By Us), make a Makka Pakka cake. The cake is a white chocolate mud cake, decorated with Royal Icing coloured with cocoa. The black eyes are the only thing he can’t eat.

I’ve never been very good at cake decorating myself, but for his family birthday celebration I am going to attempt to make penguin cupcakes. I’ll keep you posted.
